Malaysia’s Green Cities Initiative

Over the past decade, Kuala Lumpur has embarked on an ambitious plan to become one of Asia’s greenest capitals. The city government has invested in urban parks, rooftop gardens, and a network of pedestrian walkways shaded by native trees. Traffic congestion remains a challenge, but expansion of the light-rail transit (LRT) and dedicated bicycle lanes aims to reduce car usage. Community-led recycling programs and public awareness campaigns have increased recycling rates from 15% in 2010 to over 50% in 2023. Looking ahead, Kuala Lumpur plans to plant 100,000 more trees by 2025 and introduce electric buses to its public transport fleet.
